Congratulations on your new braces! Although it may look like a complicated array of hardware in your mouth, taking care of them is relatively easy.
First, don’t forget to visit your dentist. Even though you will be seeing quite a bit of your orthodontist for a while you will still need to see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams.
Second, try to stop trouble before it starts. Stay away from hard or sticky foods which can damage your dental work, and avoid foods like peanuts which can get stuck in your braces. Habits like biting your nails, chewing ice, pens, and opening packages with your teeth can increase the risk of damaging your braces. If you play sports, you should talk to your orthodontist about having a custom mouthguards made for your upper and lower teeth.
Brush your teeth at least three times a day. Start brushing at the gumline, and then brush the tops of your brackets, followed by the bottoms and the wires. Use a floss threader or a water flosser to reach get between your teeth and your braces.
